    Between February 1941 and July 1945 more than 500,000 Pennsylvanians were inducted and received their first taste of army life at the New Cumberland Army Reception Center near Harrisburg. The Center's Special Training Unit provided 13,000 inductees basic instruction in reading and writing, which they needed for military service.
